Indigenous Skills & Preparation Program

Pre-skilling and assisting Indigenous people successfully gain entry into the WA Police Service. The Program also provided training for entry into other career paths for example, the Australian Defence Force, Security, Mining and Local Government.

What We Did

We developed programs that assisted Indigenous people successfully gain entry into training for employment.

We have successfully placed many people in the communities in employment within the WA Police Service, the Australian Defence Force, Security, Mining and Local Government.

We supported participants and their families through a transition from unemployment to full-time employment. Various supports we incorporated into our work included:

  1. The importance of a high-quality recruitment and screening process.

  2. The development of family and peer group support for the participants

  3. The provision of a strong mentor support component to the program – recognising the need for mentors and role models has been a significant factor in training and employment retention.

The Program

  • A ten-week accredited course tailored for ensuring participants meet the standards for entry to a professional career within the WA Police Service.

  • Briefing sessions, interviews, character and team building sessions and skills training.

After engaging in our Indigenous Skills Preparation and Recruitment Program, we achieved major success in assisting participants into full-time employment. Results include:

  • 15 Police Officers;

  • 6 Aboriginal Police Liaison Officers; and

  • 29 out of 36 participants graduating from one of our courses pursued a career in the Australian Defence Force after passing the ADF entry examination.

UFPA acknowledges the local Indigenous people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which we work. We pay our respects to the Elders past and present of these nations and extend that respect to other Indigenous people.
